About Build It Green

Smart Environmental Solutions from the Ground Up

Build It Green is a membership-supported Bay Area nonprofit established in 2005. Our organization works with building and real estate professionals, local and state governments, and homeowners to increase awareness and adoption of green building practices. Our mission is to promote healthy, energy- and resource-efficient building practices in California through outreach and education.

Our vision is for a more sustainable world where all homes are built to support the health and vitality of people and the natural environment. We believe that changing how homes are designed, built, and remodeled is essential to preventing climate change, minimizing pollution, and protecting natural resources for future generations.

Three strategic objectives guide our work:
  • Support innovative public programs: We partner with governments and utilities to design, implement, and administer programs that promote private sector innovation and incentivize adoption of green building practices statewide.

  • Increase supply of green homes: We train building and real estate professionals on the latest best practices and connect these professionals with consumers.

  • Stimulate consumer demand: We build awareness of the benefits of green building by providing GreenPoint Rated as a trustworthy, recognized brand for green homes.

Build It Green’s program development strategy has been to incubate good ideas in the San Francisco Bay Area and then expand them statewide, helping to establish California as a role model to other states and the nation for developing pragmatic solutions to environmental challenges. We strive to design our programs to have wide-reaching policy impacts that can positively impact many Californians.

To foster collaboration and accelerate the adoption of green building practices, Build It Green provides professional forums and events that bring together stakeholders from key building industries. Our forums facilitate learning, encourage advocacy, grow leadership skills, and leverage the capacity of individuals and organizations en masse to work toward mutually beneficial goals. These forums also multiply the impacts of our other programs.

Transforming the Market for Green Homes -- Results from 2012

3600+ Energy Efficient Homes
We administer Energy Upgrade California program for PG&E territory, offering technical support and training for contractors and helping them through the submittal process for the rebates. We've got over 1000 more projects in the pipeline, so the good work continues!

4,000+ GreenPoint Rated Homes
Our GreenPoint Rated program encourages green home features that conserve energy, water, materials, and create a healthier indoor environment. This year, another 4,200 homes were GreenPoint Rated, bringing us to nearly 15,000 statewide. The energy and water savings from these homes translates to taking 12,945 passenger cars off the road for one year, and conserving 279 Olympic-size swimming pools of water.

1,200 Trained green Building Professionals
Our education and training programs reached over 1,200 professionals this year, including over 400 newly certified Green Building Professionals, Green Real Estate Professionals, and GreenPoint Raters. These professionals now have new skills to add to their business offerings, making them more competitive in the industry.

New Southern California Services
We grew our community in Southern California this year, thanks to our work with Energy Upgrade California in
Los Angeles County
and Southern California Edison's Sustainable Communities Program, hosting over 10 educational events for over 300 local green building professionals to strengthen the support network for all of you!

New Membership Services
We added value to our membership program this year with a large selection of brand new benefits. The membership program is committed to supporting the success of green building professionals and we are very excited to be able to offer an improved benefits package that helps you in your networking, promotional and educational efforts.
